Leave the Indians mascot alone
In the DHS Spectrum article, “Indian Mascot Controversy,” I think the article fairly represented both sides of the story, those who like the mascot, and those who want it changed, like Ms. Parker.
It was great to have many different voices speak about the issue, including our principal John Gould, and various Dartmouth students. I went out and talked to various people about the matter, including my neighbor, who was a member of the school committee, and he seemed to think that the Town of Dartmouth had an agreement with the local Wampanoag tribe about using the name “Indian.” I think it would be a great idea if the DHS Spectrum could follow up on that, and if there is an agreement in place, there should be no argument.
As I agree with the fact that I don’t think the school mascot should be changed, I think this article is quite an accurate representation about how I feel about the subject, which is that if the Native Americans are okay with the name, we should be, too.
